The Transitional Harley
The 1948 Harley-Davidson FL Panhead could be called the transitional Harley. This bike was created in the post WWII era. This bike was given the name of Panhead because of it's pan-shaped chrome rocker covers. The Harley-Davidson company wanted to keep some of its classic style but needed to progress for the 50's. This Panhead was the last model in which Harley-Davidson used the "Springer" trailing link reminiscent of the 30's designs. The Harley Davidson company stepped up the performance of this model by creating the OHV model which produced 50 hp. They reduced the lash and adjustment problems by creating hydraulic valve lifters.
